SOUTHWEST REGION
From the Game Commission

Allegheny County Game Warden Dan Puhala reports he’s encountered several individuals at the State Game Land 203 ranges who bought their hunting licenses without taking the required Hunter-Trapper Education. Those who do not meet the legal exemptions listed in the law are required to be certified before purchasing a license. Those who are in possession of an unlawfully obtained license are subject to the fines and penalties. 

Beaver County Game Warden Mike Yeck filed charges in the killing of a white-tailed deer. The subject admitted to shooting in the general direction of the deer to scare them away. The killing was never reported to an officer, and the deer was dragged into the nearby woods and left to decompose.

Fayette and Westmoreland counties Game Warden Andy Harvey reports an increase in illegal motorized vehicle activity on the hike-and-bike trail located near Mill Run Reservoir. This trail is open to bicycles and foot travel, but users are reporting seeing full-size trucks and ATVs using it as well. Many users have been run off the trail by these machines.

Fayette and Westmoreland counties Game Warden Andy Harvey reports there have been numerous bobcat sightings around Fayette County, especially in the Dunbar Mountain area. Many have been getting trail-camera pictures or see bobcats as they are out hiking.

Somerset County Game Warden Zachary Edwards reports a defendant recently pleaded guilty to drug charges stemming from an incident that occurred on Hunter Access property in Somerset County.

Somerset County Game Warden Shawn Barron reports two Fayette County residents were charged with possession of a controlled substance and paraphernalia on State Game Land 111 in Somerset County. The defendants were also warned for possession of alcohol on state game lands, as well as fishing without a required license.

Somerset County Game Warden Shawn Barron reports several violations at the State Game Land 50 shooting range have been observed recently. Many violations stem from users failing to purchase their 2018-19 hunting or furtaker license, or range permit. All users are reminded that a valid license or permit is needed to use Game Commission shooting ranges.

Westmoreland County Game Warden Michael J. Papinchak reports a woman was seen by a motorist walking a fawn on a leash in the front yard of her home. She turned over the fawn, which was wearing a dog harness and living in her home with dogs.  

Westmoreland County Game Warden Michael J. Papinchak reports an individual, on the day of his release from prison, illegally took possession of a white-tailed deer. Charges have been filed.

Papinchak reports a shared investigation with the Vandergrift Police resulted in one individual being found guilty of unlawful possession of white-tailed deer meat. A second individual is awaiting trial for the unlawful possession of the same deer and three charges related to fraudulent statements made to acquire licenses.

NORTHEAST REGION
From the Game Commission

Bradford County Game Warden Blake Barth reports that several roads and bridges were damaged by the flooding that occurred in Bradford County in late August. Anyone traveling to the area for hunting season may have to travel alternate routes if their normal routes of travel are closed due to flood damage.

Columbia County Game Warden Rick Deiterich issued numerous warnings to shooters using the newly reconstructed shooting range on State Game Lands58 immediately after the new hunting license year for not having current hunting licenses or range permits. 

Susquehanna County Game Warden Mike Webb reports several different species of animals have recently been submitted for rabies testing after persons handled or were bitten by suspect mammals.

SOUTHEAST REGION
From the Game Commission

Bucks County Game Warden Shawna Burkett investigated unlawful target shooting at State Game Land 139 in Richland Township. On two occasions, someone pulled into the parking area, exited the vehicle and walked approximately 70 yards along the hedgerow. There they fired dozens of rounds at glass and plastic bottles placed on the ground. The investigation is ongoing.

Chester County Game Warden Matthew Johnson reports that three men from Birdsboro were successfully prosecuted for driving around a locked gate on State Game Land 43 and operating four-wheel-drive vehicles on lands closed to motor vehicles. The incident happened in January, but prosecution was delayed because two of the defendants failed to respond to summonses and had to be brought to the Magisterial District Court through arrest warrants. Each defendant paid a fine of $200, plus court costs. 

Dauphin County Game Warden Mike Doherty reports that, with help from Game Commission Special Investigator Dave Allen, a Delaware resident was charged with buying several resident Pennsylvania hunting licenses. He pleaded guilty and paid back the $302 he saved by posing as a Pennsylvania resident, plus over $200 in fines and costs.

Lancaster County Game Warden Greg Graham reports that dove and goose hunters enjoyed a good start to the hunting season. Safety Zone violations have been reported. Hunters are advised that even size 7½ shot will travel over 200 yards, which is well over the 150-yard safety zone. 

Lancaster County Game Warden John Veylupek retrieved a juvenile bald eagle that died after ingesting a fishhook and line.  

Lancaster County Game Warden John Veylupek had two incidents in which persons attempting to handle bats, found inside their homes, were bitten. Fortunately, both bats tested negative for the rabies virus.

Northampton County Game Warden Bradley Kreider reports, “with only a couple weeks until the archery opener, we have checked several baited tree-stands in the district. 

Berks and Schuylkill counties LMGS Dave Brockmeier reports that the habitat crews are repairing roads damaged in recent storm events. Additionally, they have finished constructing sites for chronic wasting disease deer part dumpster locations.
