District 1 – Baudette area
CO Ben Huener (Roseau) and COC Jacqueline Hughes checked duck-hunting activity on Thief Lake and Lake of the Woods. Anglers were checked on the Rainy River and Lake of the Woods. Grouse and youth deer hunters were checked in the Beltrami Island State Forest. Violations for the week included duck hunters transporting loaded shotguns, possessing lead shot while duck hunting, motor larger than horsepower restrictions for Thief Lake, and no license in possession.
CO Eric Benjamin (Warroad) worked ATVing, big- and small-game, angling, boat and water, and waterfowling enforcement. Waterfowl hunting is slowing down on the lake. Anglers and waterfowl hunters were checked at the Northwest Angle. The youth deer firearms season was successful for many of the young hunters checked.
CO Jeremy Woinarowicz (Thief River Falls) took calls about unlawful youth hunting, recreational trespass, and a car-struck bear. Enforcement action was taken for leaving a stand in a state wildlife management area, trespass, and burning prohibited materials.
CO Demosthenes Regas (Blackduck) reports time was spent investigating TIP information, working a complaint about the unlawfully posting of public land, and giving a conservation officer career presentation for the Blackduck High School careers class.
District 2 – Bemidji area
CO Tom Hutchins (Crookston) and COC Fitzgerald report that some people took advantage of the warm weather to engage in various outdoor activities. The officers focused on checking anglers on the Red Lake River, as well as waterfowl hunters.
CO Tim Gray (Bagley) checked small-game and waterfowl hunters. He also found several smiling kids who had harvested their first deer during the youth firearms season.
CO Brice Vollbrecht (Bemidji) checked grouse and waterfowl hunters. Time also was spent patrolling area lakes and ATV trails. Vollbrecht responded to a TIP call about two individuals hunting on the Bemidji game refuge.
CO Chris Vinton (Perham) reports investigating TIPs about possible deer-baiting activity and patrolling area WMAs for stands left illegally. Vinton met with a local sportsmen’s group at property they own where the winners of youth hunts had drawn for stands to hunt from. Vinton also assisted a Nebraska conservation officer with the investigation of a hunter in that state who might have been revoked in Minnesota (and because of a compact, ineligible to hunt in Nebraska).
CO Steve Chihak (Moorhead) spent the week working small-game, waterfowl, and deer-hunting enforcement. Time also was spent attending the Breckenridge Middle School (Studio 5) aquatic invasive species presentations.
CO Angie Warren (Mahnomen) spent time on small-game, waterfowl, and pheasant-hunting activity. Areas were patrolled for ATVing and off-road vehicle activity. Information was provided to the local sheriff’s office about grey wolf depredations. Warren also followed up on information about an individual taking deer out of season. An investigation is ongoing. Areas were patrolled for shining activity.
CO Bill Landmark (Pelican Rapids) spent the week following up on aquatic vegetation violations discovered during compliance checks.
District 3 – Fergus Falls area
CO Tricia Plautz (Henning) worked shining activity, waterfowl hunters, and archery hunters throughout the week. Investigations are being conducted regarding illegal deer-hunting activity. A public waters violation also is under investigation.
CO Shane Osborne (Evansville) checked waterfowl, pheasant, and archery hunters. Several nuisance beaver permits were issued to a county highway department to trap out of season. A deer-hunting complaint was also investigated in Stevens County.
CO Mitch Lawler (Alexandria) worked on several deer-hunting cases involving lending and borrowing tags, untagged and unregistered deer, and trespassing. Angling activity was monitored, as muskie and walleye activity is high. One angler was cited for too many lines.
CO Brian Holt (Osakis) worked pheasant and deer hunting during the week. Time was spent checking anglers and following up on APM violations. Holt took a public waters complaint in a vacant station and issued a cease and desist order.
CO Daniel Baumbarger (Glenwood) reports enforcement efforts for the week were concentrated on checking small-game hunters, ATV operators, and waterfowl hunters.
District 4 – Walker area
CO Randy Posner (Staples) reports that he worked on fishing enforcement this past week. The CO also checked duck hunters and reports of late shooting. In addition, he worked on complaints about people driving ATVs in the Pillsbury State Forest. Some drivers were found, and enforcement action was taken.
CO Mark Mathy (Cass Lake) and COC Shane Zavodnik report a busy past week consisting of fielding calls for car-killed deer possession tags, assisting state park staff with a youth deer hunt orientation, checking waterfowl hunters, and prepping for the upcoming rifle Season. Both COs assisted the State Patrol with a vehicle that had rolled onto its roof and into the ditch due to black ice. There were no injuries.
District 5 – Eveleth area
CO Darrin Kittelson (International Falls) and CO Slatinski assisted the Koochiching County Sheriff’s Office in locating a hunter who had been missing for about 10 hours. The hunter was transported to a local hospital and treated for hypothermia.
CO John Slatinski IV (Ray) continues to monitor area trails for unauthorized use. He fielded nuisance-animal complaints and issued possession permits for road-killed deer.
CO Troy Fondie (Orr) reports monitoring ATVing and small-game hunting activities. Public access sites continue to be checked. Beaver-related problems continue.
CO Duke Broughten (Cook) spent the week monitoring angling, ATVing, small-game hunting, archery deer hunting, and waterfowl-hunting activity. Cold, windy weather seemed to limit recreational activity. Broughten also fielded several ATV-related complaints and trespass concerns.
CO Don Bozovsky (Hibbing) worked ongoing hunting seasons, ATVing, balsam bough cutters, and deer-baiting complaints, and assisted the State Patrol with a road-rage driver who displayed a handgun and a shoplifter who fled from a business. Suspects in both incidents were apprehended. One small-game hunter racked up six violations, including no small-game license, an uncased handgun in a motor vehicle, expired driver’s license, unregistered ATV, and failure to display registration.
CO Matthew Frericks (Virginia) and COC Jacob Swedberg spent the week working deer, grouse, and waterfowl hunters. They also were able to meet with two groups of youth to help with projects relating to conservation, specifically on wolf trapping and muskie fishing.
District 6 – Two Harbors area
CO Sean Williams (Ely) assisted the St. Louis County rescue squad and U.S. Border Patrol on Snowbank Lake after a group capsized their canoe in 30-mph winds and 27-degree air temperatures. The group had safely made it to an island but were wet and cold. The people and their equipment were located and brought off the lake.
CO Darin Fagerman (Grand Marais) checked trout lakes and grouse hunters. He also made sure bear hunters removed their bait stations during the week.
CO Anthony Bermel (Babbitt) and COC Lerchen report working waterfowl and grouse hunters, whitefish netters, and deer shining. Several complaints were investigated throughout the week.
CO David Schottenbauer (Silver Bay) worked ATVing and hunting activity. There seems to be a rumor going around about a law change that allows guns to be loaded while on an ATV. Schottenbauer has been clarifying that the rumor is not true. Schottenbauer also has been assisting the Lake County Sheriff’s Office with lost hikers and motorists following GPS directions into odd places.
CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Tofte) checked area hunting activity. Fall anglers also were checked, animal complaints were handled, and a bear-hunting investigation was followed up on.
CO Don Murray (Two Harbors) worked small-game hunting activity and took complaints about nuisance beaver activity.
District 7 – Grand Rapids area
CO Jayson Hansen (Bigfork) checked anglers and boating activity, patrolled campgrounds, worked ATVing activity, checked small-game hunters, and worked AIS enforcement.
CO Mike Fairbanks (Deer River) taught at the district firearms safety field day, checked waterfowl and small-game hunters, and assisted
CO Jimmy Van Asch (Pengilly) reports working big-game, waterfowl, ATVing, and small-game enforcement. Van Asch also assisted Itasca County deputies with a capsized boat. All of the occupants were located.
District 8 – Duluth area
CO Kipp Duncan (Duluth) spent the week working many different activities. Contacts were made with people small-game hunting, archery deer hunting, waterfowl hunting, and fishing. A few violations were encountered, but the vast majority of people were lawful. The CO worked on a complaint that resulted in locating a stolen camper trailer.
CO Scott Staples (Carlton) did a K9 talk and demonstration for first-grade students at the Esko school. ATV patrols were conducted in the Nemadji State Forest, where several contacts were made for unlawful juvenile operation.
Lake Superior Marine Unit
CO Keith Olson (Lake Superior Marine Unit) worked shining complaints. During the middle of the week, he checked inland walleye anglers who have been doing fairly well. Olson finished with open-water boat items and checked with U.S. Coast Guard crews on upcoming training and work planning. Bears are still out and about putting on winter weight, as several bear-related concerns were addressed.
CO Matt Miller (Lake Superior Marine Unit) checked hunters and anglers. Some skim ice was found on area lakes as trout anglers tested inland waters and duck hunters looked for divers passing through. Groups of ATV riders were contacted in the Silver Bay station operating in what they admittedly described as “a careless manner.” A complaint was received about a deer being gutted in an odd place.
District 9 – Brainerd area
CO Eric Sullivan (Pequot Lakes) and COC Garrett Thomas received a report about a deer that had been shot from the roadway. The investigation is ongoing. Time also was spent patrolling areas closed to motorized vehicles and checking remote areas for hunting activity.
CO Jim Guida (Nisswa) worked waterfowl and small-game enforcement. Guida also monitored trails for off-trail travel and also fielded deer-feeding complaints. Guida also attended a public relations event hosted by the Crosby Police Department.
CO Chelsey Best (Crosslake) provided enforcement for small-game and archery activity throughout the week. She also wrapped up a criminal dumping case.
CO Scott Fitzgerald (CCSRA) reports patrolling the park for hunters and also for park violations. He assisted a local agency and the State Patrol with several calls for service and issued several car-killed deer permits. Fitzgerald also gave a DNR law presentation to the Aitkin County Townships Association and answered many outdoor law-related questions throughout the week and weekend. A call about a swan being shot was investigated, and Fitzgerald transported an injured eagle that had been found to the Wild and Free Rehabilitation Center in Garrison. A call about someone possibly posting a county road right of way was investigated, and a call about a deer possibly illegally shot was looked into. A call about a bull being killed by wolves was investigated, and federal trappers were called in.
District 10 – Mille Lacs area
CO Dustie Speldrich (Willow River) and COC Leah Kampa checked small-game hunters in the state forest. Follow up was completed on bear-bait violations. The officers also assisted the sheriff’s office with a burglary alarm call.
CO Dan Starr (Onamia) worked small-game, waterfowl, trapping, and fishing activities. Deer are on the move and motorists should use caution. A public-to-private land sale generated some questions that were resolved with a few phone calls.
CO Bret Grundmeier (Hinckley) saw an increase in wolf-depredation complaints. Time was spent at multiple farms where it was determined that calves had likely been killed by wolves.
CO Luke Croatt (Wealthwood) checked waterfowl, small-game, and archery deer hunters. More car-killed deer permits were issued, and a waterfowl complaint was investigated.
District 11 – St. Cloud area
CO Caleb Silgjord (Sauk Centre) continued field training with COC Tony Elwell. Wetland issues were investigated, and permits were issued for vehicle-killed deer.
CO Todd VanderWeyst (Paynesville) reports working small-game, ATVing, and fishing activity. He also worked on seasonal maintenance and administrative tasks.
CO Keith Bertram (Long Prairie) continued training with COC Nathan Benkofske. Time was spent checking pheasant and duck hunters, checking anglers, and following up on deer complaints. A complaint was investigated regarding wild animals being kept at a residence. Enforcement action was taken.
District 12 – Princeton area
CO Phil Mohs (Center City) worked duck- and archery hunting activity. Numerous questions were fielded regarding the upcoming firearms deer season.
CO Mike Krauel (Mora) spent the week working big-game complaints and checking small-game hunters. He also took several trespassing complaints and dealt with several neighbor disputes.
CO Rick Reller (Buffalo) and COC Ashley Whiteoak checked duck hunters at Pelican Lake and surrounding waterfowl production areas. They also followed up on a trespassing complaint regarding duck hunters using private property and shooting ducks near a baited area.
District 13 – West Metro area
CO Vang Lee (ELCOP) worked angling and boating activities on metro-area lakes. He also handled nuisance-animal complaints in Minneapolis and issued an ATV permit to an individual in Minneapolis.
CO James Fogarty (Prior Lake) checked waterfowl hunters who did not seem to know the rules. In one group alone, two hunters were found without plugged guns, one hunter had lead shot, two hunters shot at blackbirds, and all were hunting a half-hour past sunset. Education and enforcement action were taken for an unplugged shotgun, hunting waterfowl with toxic shot, attempting to take nongame migratory birds, and hunting waterfowl during closed hours.
CO Alexander Birdsall (Waconia) reports that while on a patrol an unoccupied car was checked in a WMA parking lot. The registered owner had an active warrant and a local deputy assisted in locating the suspect at a nearby house party. Partygoers were able to gather the funds necessary to settle the warrant and return to the party.
CO Tim Maass (Osseo) continued to check waterfowl hunters on area lakes and rivers. Maass also handled several nuisance-wildlife complaints and questions. Time also was spent investigating a deer-hunting complaint and a trapping complaint.
District 14 – East Metro area
CO Luke Gutzwiller (White Bear Lake) continued to follow up on multiple litter investigations. Enforcement action was taken for hunting small game after hours, no blaze orange, operating a motorboat within a WMA, and watercraft registration issues.
CO Chris Tetrault (Maplewood) fielded several calls regarding open and upcoming hunting seasons. Follow-up was conducted on a big-game investigation. A ginseng inspection was conducted.
District 15 – Marshall area
CO Andrew Dirks (Worthington) and COC Annette Kyllo report working pheasant hunters, waterfowl hunters, archery deer hunters, and anglers. They would like to remind hunters that bonus deer tags cannot be used in lottery permit areas. Please refer to the fold-out map that comes with the hunting regulation booklet.
CO Craig Miska (Ortonville) reports continuing field training with COC Andrew Goodman. They found a good number of pheasant and waterfowl hunters afield. Enforcement action included various small-game and littering violations.
CO Jim Robinson (Slayton) spent the week working hunters and anglers. Several investigations were conducted.
District 16 – New Ulm area
CO Jeff Denz (Willmar) checked anglers, archery hunters, and waterfowl hunters. He also followed up on complaints related to big-game hunting.
CO Nicholas Klehr (Litchfield) worked pheasant hunters and duck hunters most of the week. Other time was spent working ATVing and OHMing enforcement. Trespass calls were handled, and all hunters are reminded it is their responsibility to know where they are at and what property they are on.
CO Thor Nelson (New Ulm) assisted a group of waterfowl hunters who had capsized their boat and another group of hunters whose boat was stuck in cattail bogs. He also received calls regarding trespassing and deer-registration violations.
CO Dustin Miller (Windom) and COC Karon investigated a report about a large dead buck, with its head removed, on the side of the road near the Expandere WMA. The public is asked to contact Miller with any information related to this deer.
District 17 – Mankato area
CO Chris Howe (St. Peter) reports checking waterfowl and small-game activity this past week. High winds in the area made waterfowl hunting more dangerous than usual.
CO Chad Davis (Owatonna) checked big-game and small-game hunters, anglers, boaters, OHMers, and ATV operators during the week. He received multiple TIP calls about illegal hunting activity. Davis also patrolled state parks, public access sites, waterfowl production areas, and wildlife management areas.
District 18 – Rochester area
CO Tom Hemker (Winona) and COC Tyler Ramaker report a littering case was investigated in which the trash dumper had said he planned to return to the ditch to pick up his belongings but had not had a chance to do it. Hunters participating in the early antlerless and youth season deer hunts had some success. However, enforcement action was taken for several license and party-hunting violations, including a person who knocked the antlers off his buck in an effort to sneak it by as a doe.
CO Brittany Hauser (Red Wing) reports assistance was given to the Red Wing Police Department in attempting to locate an individual who fled on foot.
