Question: Winter fun in Ky/VA/OH/WV area

I'm looking for some place to go this January for a winter outdoors vacation. We're looking for somewhere to stay where we can cross-country ski or snowshoe while still staying warm at night. We're looking at Black Forest State park, which we love that area in the summer. But we were wondering if there were other areas within our 3-4 hour driving range (like Hocking Hills or Shenandoah, Red River Gorge). We weren't sure what those areas are like in mid-January or if there are other hidden gems we're missing.

Not looking for down hill skiing or resort like setting, just a place where we can get out on trails to see the outdoors. Any suggestions welcome!
