Antigo team
Warden Curt Butler, of Merrill, with assistance from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department, investigated an illegal deer complaint in the early morning hours of Sept. 27. The investigation revealed that three individuals had been involved in shining and shooting deer that night, using lights and a compound bow. One deer was hit with an arrow, but never recovered.
Warden Brad Dahlquist, of Crandon, investigated two individuals who were found to be illegally harvesting ginseng roots in September on prohibited lands in Forest County. Enforcement actions were taken for harvesting ginseng without valid licenses, and failing to possess leaves and flowering/fruit stalks during transportation.
While performing waterfowl enforcement patrol on a spring pond in Langlade County, warden Tim Otto contacted a group of duck hunters who were calling ducks more than 20 minutes after the close of shooting hours. One of the hunters shot at a chickadee in frustration over the lack of ducks. Enforcement action was taken.
Northeast Region
Green Bay team and Northeast Operations Marine Unit team

Warden Jordan Resop, of Sturgeon Bay, and deputy warden Jake Zach contacted two shore fishermen in southern Door County in September. The contact lead to a consent search of their vehicle where marijuana and paraphernalia were discovered. Enforcement action was taken.
Warden Resop is creating a learn-to-hunt waterfowl program for southern Door County. Anyone interested in the 2019 fall program may contact Resop at (920) 493-0546.
Warden Jake Zach, of Fish Creek, received call in September about a female who was stumbling around her campsite and falling to the ground. He contacted the individuals on the site and the female, who provided false information, was issued a citation for underaged drinking and a DNR citation for obstructing an officer. All parties were evicted from the state park.
Warden Alek Henseler, of Fish Creek, while working the fall salmon run in September in Manitowoc County, issued one citation for fishing without a license and referred charges to Manitowoc County for fishing under revocation (second offense).
Lake Winnebago team
Warden Michael Disher, of Chilton, investigated a citizen complaint of illegal deer hunting activity within the boundaries of High Cliff State Park. Disher located one crossbow hunter and one bowhunter each using treestands while hunting off a horse trail on the south end of the park. Archery deer hunting at High Cliff is closed until Nov. 15. Enforcement action was taken for hunting deer in a closed area.
Warden Jason Higgins, of Oshkosh, checked a duck hunter on Lake Butte des Morts and found the man did not have a state waterfowl stamp or HIP certification. The man was hunting with a gun capable of holding more than three shells, and did not have an Exterior Zone goose permit even though he was hunting geese, as well as ducks. The man was warned for several violations, including an uncovered boat battery and having the wrong registration on his boat. Enforcement action was taken.
While patrolling High Cliff State Park in September, warden Amanda Kretschmer, of Winneconne, observed a male and female smoking what appeared to be marijuana. Through investigation and along with the assistance of Calumet County deputies and a drug dog, the individuals were found to be in possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and an electric weapon. Neither person had a concealed carry permit allowing them to be in possession of an electric weapon. One person was arrested and booked into the Calumet County jail for possession of the electric weapon. Criminal charges were referred for the possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
While patrolling on the opening weekend of waterfowl season, wardens Kretschmer and Jason Higgins, of Oshkosh, observed three hunters shoot at a cormorant on public property outside of Omro. Upon contact, the hunters stated they had not shot anything throughout the morning. While checking licenses, approvals and the firearms, one hunter was found to not be HIP registered and one hunter was in possession of a shotgun capable of holding more than three shells. One hunter eventually stated he did shoot at one wood duck. The wardens explained he shot at a cormorant, which is a protected species. Enforcement action was taken.
Wardens Thomas Sturdivant and Kretschmer investigated a complaint in September of a person baiting with 50-pound bags of corn long before the 2018 archery deer season was scheduled to open. Contact was made with the hunter. The individual admitted to placing bait roughly one month before the Sept. 15 opener and exceeding the 2-gallon limit. Enforcement action was taken.
Warden Sturdivant investigated a complaint of a person leaving a portable treestand overnight fastened to a tree on state lands south of Hwy. 64. Further investigation revealed that the stand had been there for several days. Enforcement action was taken.
As wardens Sturdivant and Kretschmer were traveling to an environmental complaint they heard a report over the police radio of a possible runaway missing in windy and cold conditions. The 9-year-old girl was dressed in shorts, a T-shirt and had no shoes on. She was reported to be walking alone on a county road. Coincidentally, the wardens were on the same road and noticed the alleged runaway ahead of them. The wardens contacted the sheriff’s department over the radio and advised them of the child’s location. The wardens then contacted the young child, had her sit in their squad, turned the heat on high, covered her in warm jackets and then transported her to a local Kwik Trip where they met with a sheriff’s deputy. The young child also had her most favorite possessions in the world tucked away in a separate T-shirt. The girl and her possessions were eventually placed in the custody of the deputy.
Southeast Region
Racine, Kenosha, Walworth team
Warden Brandon Smith, of Twin Lakes, contacted people fishing for bluegills near the Fox River in September. One person was found to be fishing without a license. Another was found to have caught 38 bluegills and had not taken the time to count the fish. Enforcement action was taken.
Warden Smith assisted DNR fisheries staff members with an electrofishing survey on Silver Lake. Upon returning to the launch, Smith could smell the odor of marijuana and contacted two fishermen in a boat near the launch. The boat operator was found to have smoked marijuana prior to operating the boat. Enforcement action was taken.
Warden Brad Latza, of Racine, responded to a traffic accident with injuries while working the opener of the dove, goose and teal season in September. Wardens were the first on the scene and assisted the victim, the sheriff’s department deputies, and the emergency medical team.
Wardens Taylor Meinholz, of Union Grove, and Mike Hirschboeck, of Waterford, received a call in September that an osprey had swooped down and hooked itself on a topwater bass bait on the Fox River. The wardens located the bird, captured it and brought the bird to Fellow Mortals and had the hooks removed. The bird had superficial wounds and was released a few days later.
South-Central Region
Dodgeville team
Wardens David Youngquist, of Iowa County, and Collin Sherod cited two campers for disorderly conduct at Yellowstone Lake State Park in September. The campers were up for most of the night and involved in intoxicated fist fights and wrestling matches most of the night. Nearby campers were unable to sleep, worried about their own safety and reported it the next morning.
Warden Youngquist investigated an abandoned vehicle in a DNR public hunting ground parking lot. The car was towed there as part of a divorce dispute. Enforcement action was taken.
