I live in the Philippines and I work for an environmental non-profit. I've probably done maybe more than 10 mountain climbs, river treks, and long hikes. But what bothers me is that I don't know how I can improve my skills in mountain climbing and just navigating rough terrains.
We are currently holding resource inventories in the forests, requiring us to climb steep slopes. While climbing up is a challenge, the bigger challenge for me is going down without feeling like I might slip. Additionally, while river trekking is something that I can easily do, I can't do it as fast as the others because I feel like I might slip and lose balance. I feel like I don't know how to walk in paths that are not flat, requiring me most times to hold on to every branch or rock that I come across, while others just seem to walk with ease.
For the record though, I work with indigenous peoples, so they definitely have greater skills in going up the mountains and navigating rough terrains. I guess I just want to get better, because I'm suppposed to lead this project and go with them up in the mountains, but I somehow always end up staying behind and being a burden for not being able to climb up easily.
It just really frustrates me that I'm a burden for not having enough climbing and hiking finesse, and even if I do this a lot more times, I don't know how I might possibly improve.
I'm also a little overweight, if that matters. But I can definitely do long distance walking and even walk faster than everybody else, just not in rocky terrains or steep slopes.
Any advice will really be appreciated.
